Bush or Beach walks:
Kare Kare beachCross the small stream at the car park and walk along the small lagoon past the surf club and out on to the wide open Kare Kare west coast surf beach. The beach its self was the back drop for the film 'The Piano'. All around the beach are towering volcanic cliffs and beautiful west coast bush. Take a short stroll up and down the beach or turn it into a full day trip with a hike to Whatipua beach - visiting the old kauri timber tram line and tunnel on the way.

Walk along a track surrounded by trunks of the ancient pohutukawa trees growing from the sand dunes which create an archway. During summer the pohutukawa or New Zealand Christmas tree is covered by bright red blooms. Along this walk are a number of glades ideal for picnics, BBQs or quiet reflection. The option is there to follow the glade walk around over the sand dunes and on to Kare Kare beach.
The Waitakere ranges have numerous walking tracks available to suit everyone. From short 20 minute strolls to full day hikes. There are far too many to list here, but you can check this
